Nautical Themes

There are a few decorating themes  based on life at or around the sea and they often merge –  a beach or seaside theme, for instance, can also be described as nautical although I tend to think the term refers to life on the sea rather than beside it? Classic nautical colours are navy blue, sky blue, sea green and deep red. Ideally you should use strong colours for bedding, curtains and accessories with a neutral background on walls and ceilings providing the ideal canvas.

Nautical Bedding

Nautical themed bedding is generally available in some form or another from most home furnishing retailers although you may need to combine ideas from a few ranges to get the look you want. Accessories are equally plentiful with a selection of original beach and maritime inspired designs.

Pale blue nautical themed bedding set with sail boats applique

On The Sea is the name of this bedding set from Laura Ashley and we have mentioned it before with the beach theme ideas but the boat design makes it equally relevant for a nautical theme. Made from 100% cotton it has all the classic elements with appliquéd sail boats teamed with stripes and checks on a pale blue background.

Pale blue gingham is always a safe bet and goes particularly well  in a maritime setting. This poly/cotton bedding set is from ebay seller nautical interiors where you’ll find a whole range of nautical and seaside themed bedding and accessories.

Boy's duvet cover and pillowcase in classic blue, white and red stripes

This boy’s duvet cover and pillowcase from Marks & Spencer is another example using blue, white and red stripes. A simple idea that works well by providing a palette of colours to match throughout your theme.

Nautical Themed Accessories

For a truly original and personal theme why not collect a few mementos from your holiday or favourite beach destination – something as simple as a few seashells or even a piece of driftwood can make all the difference when it comes to evoking memories of a happy family time. It’s also a good idea to look in your local antique and second-hand stores for any naval type odds and ends, chandlery or even pieces salvaged from boats such as brass clocks or just simple fittings which can be adapted as coat hangers, for example.
