Where space is an issue you’ll want to get the best use you can from each piece of children’s furniture and a traditional bunk bed is ideal in this situation. Bunk beds have been around in some shape of form for a long time and this is no accident – in terms of functionality per square metre there is no furniture solution which comes even close. There are many modern designs available with practical features such as built-in storage and display shelving. Kid’s really love these kind of contemporary designs and although the initial cost can be high these kind of bunk beds can prove to be economical when you consider the savings made on extra draw units, storage and shelving.
Anchorage Bunk Bed – £475
Here’s a modern design bunk bed from GLTC which is made from pine and mdf with solid wooden mattress slats and comes complete with a pair of coordinating under-bed drawers.
Available in natural pine or painted white the Anchorage Bunk Bed can be separated at a later date if required to provide two standard single beds.
I like the solid square section construction and the slatted design head and foot boards which look perfectly good when used as separate beds – unlike some others which always look as if they were obviously once a bunk bed.
The storage drawers are a welcome addition and have castors fitted so are easy to slide from under the bed. This bed is better known as the Barcelona Bunk Bed by Julian Bowen and if you don’t want the under-bed drawers you can buy it from amazon for around £265.
This bed measure 107cm width x 209cm length x 1.59 metres high and takes a standard sized single mattress 36″ x 75″ (90cm x 190cm)
Ashton Bunk Bed – £699

Fairford Children’s Bunk Bed – £850
Another bed from John Lewis, the Fairford, is made from solid oak pieces with the larger panels being an oak veneer. The traditional colour serves to highlight the quality of this solid children’s furniture piece.
Unlike with many similar beds the ladder is an integral part of the design and not simply fixed on afterwards so is reassuringly sturdy, which is particularly important where young children are concerned.
This bed measure 101cm width x 201cm length x 1.5 metres high and takes a standard sized single mattress 36″ x 75″ (90cm x 190cm)
Harbour Storage Bunk Bed – £950
The creative spirit of Parisot is evidenced in this Harbour Bunk Bed, also from GLTC, which manages to squeeze as much storage space as possible into its design with apparent ease.
The safe wooden stairs are turned into shelves, there’s a magazine/book holder at the side of the top bunk, more shelves at the sides for lamps, toys, books etc and a large under-bed drawer that can also be used as an extra truckle bed in case of guests! And just to add your own touch, the shelving fascias are reversible so you choose which colour you want. The word ‘clever’ doesn’t seem enough really does it?
This is certainly not the cheapest bunk bed you’ll find but when you consider the wealth of extra storage, combined with the years of practical use it really is a great investment to make. The Harbour Bunk Bed is manufactured in France by Parisot and is also available from The Kid’s Window

A word about mattresses…
A standard UK size single mattress is 90cm wide x 190cm and is commonly referred to as a 3 foot mattress (being 3′ wide x 6′ 3″ long). Some bunk beds and cabin beds, particularly brands made outside the UK such as Parisot and Stompa, require a non-standard size mattress which are slightly longer – usually 200cm (6′ 7″) If you need to buy a new mattress then it’s worth bearing in mind that Ikea stock this size as standard and some on-line retailers who specialise in just selling mattresses can often be a lot cheaper than buying from the bed retailer direct.
